Island of Lastovo

About the Lastovo island

Lastovo is an island in south Dalmatia and also the farthest inhabited Croatian island. This is why Lastovo can be visited only in Dubrovnik – Dubrovnik itinerary option. Lastovo is an island with untouched and extremely beautiful nature. Therefore, it is the best choice for those who want to spend a completely relaxing and peaceful holiday.

Lastovo is the most forested Croatian island; 70 % of the surface is covered in forest. It is the biggest island in the Lastovo archipelago which counts 46 small islands and reefs. Interesting fact is that the whole area is in number 46. There are 46 fields, 46 mountains and 46 churches. Even locals joke that if the trend of emigration continues there will be 46 people left as well.
But we hope this won’t be the scenario because this is one of the most beautiful locations to live in.

Docking and anchoring on Lastovo island

Ubli is the only ferry port on the island and there you can also find a supermarket, a restaurant, a bar, a post office and the only gas station on the island. This is a well protected bay where you can be safely docked or anchored. We urge you to stay on anchor because it allows you to swim around the boat and enjoy the crystal clean sea. Additionally, there are many more bays around the island so finding a perfect spot won’t be a problem.

Lastovo park of nature

In 2007 Lastovo islands were proclaimed a nature park. This is due to rich underwater life. Local people were very smart and they implemented a strategy of how to preserve the fish population in the area. They made an agreement among themselves to fish 3 years on the north side of the island and 3 years on the south side of the island. This way they managed, through years, to maintain high fish funds which earned them nature park protection. It is a great example of how a simple strategy can be effective in the long term for everyone involved in it. In general we could learn a lot from this strategy because we need our resources more than ever before.

Ticket to park of nature:
Besides anchoring, there is an additional entrance fee for the park of nature. Price of the ticket is around 50 EUR. It’s possible to check updated prices on official Lastovo Nature Park site.

Restaurants on Lastovo

There are only a few restaurants on Lastovo island which act as households. These are amazing local households with a small menu, but all you will drink or eat there is home grown and made by the locals. We strongly urge you to try meat under the bell and home made cheese. Lastovo is known to always have the best fresh fish and great olive oil to offer.

What to do on Lastovo island

Besides enjoying breathtaking nature and local eco food we urge you to have a half day excursion to visit inland. Van tours can be organized which will take you to the most interesting locations. Lastovo has 6 villages in total and one of the oldest settlements is the main village called Lastovo. This village is famous for its chimneys. As bigger and more decorated the chimney was, the house was considered wealthier and more prosperous. In Skrivena luka (eng. “hidden harbor”) village is a beautiful light house which is one of the oldest in Croatia.

The Van will take you to the highest point of the island from where the breath-taking view of the Croatian islands extends. Also, on top of this hill is a large telescope. Lastovo is the best location for star observation in Europe because of minimum light pollution due to its location in the middle of the Adriatic Sea. Tour can finish in one of the local households for wine tasting or dinner.
